| Any person operating a motor vehicle involved in an accident is required to
stop in a safe place to provide information and render aid, if necessary. "Hit
and run" is a term used to describe failure to stop after an accident.
If you have been injured in an accident with a driver who flees the scene, whether or not the person who caused the accident actually struck your vehicle, you are entitled to present an uninsured motorist claim under your automobile insurance policy. Your insurance carrier will be required to pay compensation to your for your injuries, except that it will not be required to pay for property damage to your vehicle. Uninsured Motorists Coverage covers expenses associated with injuries you, your family, or your passengers may suffer in a hit-and-run accident or in an accident with an uninsured vehicle. In New York State, coverage up to $25,000 is provided for one person and $50,000 for two or more persons in any one accident.
